In 2024 the Cary Police Department reported 2,410 property offenses to the FBI, or 13.3 per 1,000 residents. The FBI Crime Data Explorer shows 20.1 per 1,000 for North Carolina and 17.7 per 1,000 nationally for the same year, so Cary's property crime rate was about one-third lower than the state rate.1

FBI-reported property offenses in Cary rose from 1,984 in 2022 (11.1 per 1,000) to 2,259 in 2023 (12.4) and 2,410 in 2024 (13.3), mostly because of larceny, while burglaries fell from 300 to 218 to 162 over the same years; the FBI's 2025 figures show property offenses down to 1,783.12

What stands out in Cary

  • Larceny is most of Cary's property crime: 2,025 of 2,410 property offenses in 2024 (84 percent). FBI NIBRS data for Cary list 948 shoplifting offenses and 575 thefts from motor vehicles that year, the two largest theft types.1367
  • About half of Cary's vehicle larcenies involve no forced entry. Cary's open data lists 518 larcenies from motor vehicles in 2024, and 267 of them (about half) are coded as non-forced. Of the 575 thefts from vehicles in FBI NIBRS data, 284 were in parking lots or garages, 135 at homes and 54 at hotels or motels.612
  • Most burglaries in Cary are at homes, but the number is falling. FBI NIBRS location data put 110 of 163 burglaries in 2024 at a residence, and the department's 2024 annual report counts 158 burglaries, down from 221 in 2023.813
  • Vehicle theft dropped after a 2023 spike. The Cary Police Department's 2024 annual report counts 194 vehicles stolen in 2024, down 42 percent from 336 in 2023, and 573 larceny-from-motor-vehicle incidents in 2024.13
  • Construction sites and hotels also show up in the data. FBI NIBRS data for 2024 list 20 'all other larceny' offenses and 3 burglaries at construction sites in Cary. In May 2023, after overnight vehicle break-ins at four hotels, Cary police told ABC11 they were urging people not to leave valuables in their cars.8920

  • The Cary Police Department covers about 60 square miles inside town limits, in parts of Wake, Durham and Chatham counties. Patrol is organized into north and south districts, each split into east and west areas, plus a Downtown zone. Each incident in the Town's open data is tagged with its police district and beat.1213
  • Cary Police Department figures cover only the Town's own jurisdiction. Nearby unincorporated areas, including some addresses with a Cary mailing address, are policed by the county sheriff's office, which reports to the FBI as a separate agency (for example, the Wake County Sheriff's Office, ORI NC0920000). Those incidents are not in Cary's numbers.1113
  • Cary is still adding homes. Town permit data list 387 new residential building permit applications issued in 2024: 179 detached single-family, 191 attached single-family and 17 buildings with five or more units. The police department's 2024 annual report estimates the population at 191,000.1318
