  • UNC Police has primary jurisdiction on property owned or leased by UNC-Chapel Hill (N.C.G.S. 116-40.5) and primary response for the Granville Towers property, and a town and university agreement lets its officers act elsewhere in town under defined conditions. Incidents there appear in UNC Police data, not CHPD's.12

What the numbers mean

A security plan built for Chapel Hill

Larceny and theft make up most reported property crime in Chapel Hill, so the plan starts with the easy targets: cars, porches and garages.

Doors, windows and the garage

Chapel Hill Police Department recorded 217 burglaries in 2024. Sensors on every exterior door, the garage door and ground-floor windows, plus glass-break detectors, sound the alarm before anyone gets far.

Driveway, porch and cars

Larceny and theft made up 79% of reported property crime in Chapel Hill in 2024. 118 vehicle thefts were reported in 2024. A video doorbell and a driveway camera show who walks up, send an alert to your phone, and keep the recording.

A response that counts

Monitored alarms reach a UL-listed central station 24/7, and verified alarms get the right response. We handle local alarm registration when it applies.

Building or renovating

Wire it before the walls close

Renovating a classic Chapel Hill home or finishing a new build? We design wiring and security that disappear into the architecture. It's cleaner, it's hidden, and it saves you money versus retrofitting later.

Good to know

Alarm rules and tips for Chapel Hill

Local alarm rules. Chapel Hill runs an Accidental Alarm Program handled by the vendor Cry Wolf (1-855-725-7107). Registering an alarm avoids a $100 fine for each of the first three accidental alarms at an address in a rolling one-year period. Regardless of registration, excessive accidental alarms in a rolling year are fined: 4th and 5th, $100 each; 6th and 7th, $200 each; 8th and 9th, $300 each; 10th or more, $500 each. Questions go to CHPD at 919-968-2760. Source.

Registration. Many Triangle towns ask monitored alarm systems to be registered and charge for repeat false alarms. Our alarm registration guide has the current rules and links, and we help you register when we install.

Switching companies. Already have a system? Wired sensors can often be reused with a new panel. Some panels are locked by the old dealer; we check on the visit and tell you plainly. How switching works.

"Secur-Tek and every person who works there can be summed up in one word: awesome. These guys did the original audio/video on our home and the work they did was flawless."
