What stands out in Clayton

  • Theft is by far the most common reported crime in Clayton. FBI incident data for 2024 show 121 shoplifting offenses, 89 thefts from vehicles and 106 other thefts, compared with 17 burglaries; about 43 percent of 2024 property offense records were at stores, restaurants and gas stations, about a third were at homes, and 11 were at construction sites.13
  • Thefts from vehicles happen both at home and in parking lots: of the 89 recorded in 2024, 47 were at residences and 30 were in parking lots or garages. In August 2023 Clayton police took reports from 13 residents whose cars had been entered overnight, all of them left unlocked, and the police chief advised keeping cars locked, keys out of the vehicle and valuables out of sight.34
  • Vehicle thefts rose from 35 in 2023 to 51 in 2024 (FBI), and 32 of the 50 vehicle thefts in the 2024 incident data were taken from residences. The police department's 2025 annual report shows 23 motor vehicle thefts in 2025.135
  • During the 2023 holiday season, Clayton police arrested a suspect after numerous package theft reports, using footage from residents' cameras to identify the suspect's vehicle. An officer suggested package lockers or workplace delivery, asking carriers to leave packages out of view from the street, and home cameras.6
  • Outside town limits, vehicle break-ins at homes are handled by the Johnston County Sheriff's Office: in June 2023 its detectives investigated six weekend car break-ins at homes near Clayton, and in mid-2026 the Sheriff's Office investigated further waves of vehicle break-ins in unincorporated neighborhoods and urged residents to lock vehicle doors, remove valuables and report suspicious people or vehicles right away.78

  • Clayton Police Department responds inside town limits. Addresses outside town limits, including the town's extraterritorial planning area, are served by the Johnston County Sheriff's Office, whose patrol deputies are assigned to eight patrol areas across the county; for example, a series of residential break-ins in the Clayton area in late 2023 and early 2024 was investigated by the Sheriff's Office.91011
  • Clayton is growing: the FBI population figure for the town rose from 30,036 in 2022 to 31,494 in 2024, and Clayton police handled 55,082 calls for service in 2024, up 33 percent from 41,386 in 2023 (50,381 in 2025).1512
  • In 2025 the department began building two permanent police substations to move services out into the community instead of operating from one location, and patrol is organized into four squads.5
  • For comparison, the Johnston County Sheriff's Office, which serves the unincorporated county, reported 1,310 property crimes in 2024 for a service population of 184,826, about 7.1 per 1,000 residents (FBI Crime Data Explorer).13

Good to know

Alarm rules and tips for Clayton

Local alarm rules. Clayton requires every home or business with an alarm system inside town limits or in the 2-mile extraterritorial jurisdiction to register it and get a free permit from the Clayton Police Department. The town allows one false alarm per month; each additional false alarm costs $50, and fines can be appealed with the town's appeal form. The registration form asks for the alarm type (residential or commercial) and three people who can respond to the property at any time, and it can be returned by mail, fax or email. Source.

Registration. Many Triangle towns ask monitored alarm systems to be registered and charge for repeat false alarms. Our alarm registration guide has the current rules and links, and we help you register when we install.

Switching companies. Already have a system? Wired sensors can often be reused with a new panel. Some panels are locked by the old dealer; we check on the visit and tell you plainly. How switching works.

"What a great experience, Nelson the tech was awesome and Dave my salesman is awesome too! And I love using local service! Rates are very affordable."
